Areas
North Bund and Hongkou
北外滩 / 虹口 / 提篮桥
North of Suzhou Creek: the former Jewish refugee quarter around Tilanqiao, Lu Xun Park, Duolun Road and the 1933 Old Millfun slaughterhouse.
Best forJewish refugee historylocal life
Hongkou (虹口, Hóngkǒu) is the district north of Suzhou Creek. Much of it lay in the International Settlement, and in the 1930s and 1940s the streets around Tilanqiao (提篮桥, Tílánqiáo) were home to Jewish refugees from Europe.
What to see
The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, in a restored synagogue, is the place to start for that history.
To the north, Lu Xun Park holds the writer Lu Xun’s tomb and memorial hall, and a short walk away Duolun Road is a quiet pedestrian street of former writers’ homes. Closer to the creek, 1933 Old Millfun is a concrete former slaughterhouse with covered walkways inside, now a creative complex. The story behind it is in The Council’s slaughterhouses.
As a base
Hongkou is a good choice if you want somewhere less polished than the Bund and are happy to ride the metro. The Bund is across Waibaidu Bridge from its southern edge.
