李光久Lǐ Guāngjiǔ · 1845–1900
Hunan Army officer who, as Shanghai daotai in 1899, agreed with the consuls the boundaries of the enlarged International Settlement.
Li Guangjiu (李光久, Lǐ Guāngjiǔ) was a Hunan-born soldier-official who served briefly as Shanghai daotai in 1899. His father, Li Xubin, was a Hunan Army general; Li himself led battalions of the Old Hunan Army at Niuzhuang in 1895 against Japanese forces, where he alone survived the fighting, according to the gazetteer.
He took the daotai post in April 1899. Together with negotiators sent by the Liangjiang governor-general, he agreed an extension of the foreign settlements with the consuls. On 8 May 1899 the enlarged International Settlement was proclaimed: its edges ran from Yangshupu in the east to Zhoujiazui, westwards from Nichengqiao to Jing’an Temple, and north to the county boundary. Soon after he was promoted to Zhejiang and sent to Ningbo with 36 battalions against Italian naval pressure. He died in 1900.
