The story

Qibao Catholic Church (七宝天主堂, Qībǎo Tiānzhǔtáng), at 50 Nanjie, is the parish church of Qibao old town. It was finished in the 1860s as the mother church for a dozen smaller chapels scattered through the farmland around it, and it was the first Catholic church in the Minhang area to reopen after 1966.

Why did the parish move to Qibao?

Before Qibao, the local Catholic centre was Tangwan (塘湾, Tángwān), a hamlet in what is now Qibao Town. The Shanghai County Gazetteer says it was a main mission point of the Jiangnan region from the Kangxi era, and that in 1842 a Jesuit brought all of Shanghai’s Chinese priests there for a retreat. The district was renamed Qibao in 1856. When the church in Qibao town was completed in 1867, the centre of local activity moved with it. The Minhang gazetteer dates the start of building to 1866; Chinese Wikipedia gives the consecration as 2 August 1867.

How big did it get?

Qibao was the largest church in the old Shanghai County. Three enlargements produced a hall of 594 square metres that held over 1,000 people, on a site of more than ten mu. The 1984 county survey lists twelve churches in the Qibao parish, including Xujiatang, Ruanjiashe, Nanzhang and Xuejiatang, all within a few kilometres. Between 1847 and the eve of 1949, fifty priests served here, eighteen of them foreigners.

What happened after 1949?

By 1957 only four churches were still open in the county, and Qibao and Maqiao each drew over 800 people at a Mass. The figure fell to 250 in 1961 and to about twenty in 1965. Activities stopped in August 1966. Restoration started on 10 August 1981, and the church reopened on 15 August 1982. Chinese Wikipedia adds that the bell tower had been destroyed on 23 May 1949, as Nationalist troops pulled out.

The Minhang District government listed the church as a protected cultural relic on 30 September 2000. In 2009 it had a major structural repair, and the bell tower was rebuilt. A ceremony on 9 January 2010 marked the reopening.

What to look for

Stand on Nanjie and look first at the bell tower, which belongs to the 2009-10 rebuilding. At the entrance, the heritage plaque carries the 2000 date. Separate safety boards also name a Ming-dynasty stone lion (明代石狮) among the protected items, so look for it in the grounds. The wall also has a round badge reading “Stories of Shanghai Architecture.”
