The story
The Shanghai International Resort shopping district (国际旅游度假区商圈, Guójì Lǚyóu Dùjiàqū Shāngquān) is the retail and dining area around Shanghai Disney Resort, far out in Pudong. A visitor goes for Disneytown (迪士尼小镇), the shopping street beside Shanghai Disneyland, or for Bicester Village Shanghai (上海村, Shanghai Village), an outlet village next to it. It is a resort district, not a historic one. All of it dates from 2016 or later.
Shanghai’s 2022–2035 commercial plan names it one of the city’s 29 city-level commercial centres, about 6.8 km² with some 500,000 m² of planned shop and mall floor space.
Shanghai Disney Resort opened on 16 June 2016 in Chuansha New Town. It covers about 4.1 square km and includes the park, Disney Town, Wishing Star Park, two themed hotels and a 14.6-hectare retail, dining and entertainment area. The resort sits within the Shanghai International Tourism and Resort Zone (上海国际旅游度假区), a national-level resort area of about 24.7 square km that Chinese Wikipedia dates to 2016.
Disneytown has five areas: Broadway Plaza, Broadway Boulevard, Spice Alley, the Marketplace and Lakeshore. The sources disagree on its opening. English Wikipedia says 16 June 2016. Chinese Wikipedia says it opened to the public on 26 April 2016, with shops in trial operation from 7 May. Its Walt Disney Grand Theatre staged Mandarin productions of The Lion King and later Beauty and the Beast, then, after about five years, was repurposed as an attraction inside the park.
Bicester Village Shanghai, at No. 88 Shendi East Road, opened in 2016 and has nearly 200 boutiques. A Shanghai government page describes its buildings as 1920s Art Deco in style, inspired by Milan, Vienna, New York and Paris, with a lakefront view. A Pudong government article of April 2023 counts it, with the Suzhou village, as more than 400 selected brands in all.
Getting around: Metro Line 11 stops at Disney Resort station. For the outlet village, the same Shanghai government page says to leave by Exit 4 and take resort shuttle bus 1 to Bicester Village station. The Airport Link Line’s Shanghai International Resort station opened on 27 December 2024, according to Chinese Wikipedia.
