South Shanghai Church (南上海天主堂, Nán Shànghǎi Tiānzhǔtáng) at 155 Yunhe Road in Nanqiao (南桥, Nánqiáo), Fengxian, is the newest of the Catholic churches in this group. It is also a merger: four older Fengxian churches were closed and rebuilt as one.
What does “four churches in one” mean?
A stone inscription at the church says the project replaced the Yujia, Hucun, Liuli and Zhuangxing churches, all affected by relocation. It kept the title of the Yujia church, Our Lady Patroness (圣母主保堂). The site is 68,215 square metres, with 36,034 square metres of buildings. The government paid for 1,202 square metres of that, and the diocese added 2,401 square metres. Work began on 30 September 2021, and the next day the Nanqiao priests Lu Qinglin, Yu Bo and Wu Yongtao held a blessing. It was finished in August 2023.
The old Yujia church behind the name
Yujia church was one of fourteen outstations of Hucun parish in the 1922 deanery. A stele recalls its history: founded in April 1894 and rebuilt in 1931, a one-row building of 3,200 square metres with over 30 mu of church land. After 1949 the township used it for political events, then a production team used it as a warehouse. In 1991 the diocese got a property certificate for 299 square metres. In May 1998 industrial development in Fengxian forced a relocation agreement, and it was to be rebuilt elsewhere.
Why is the building shaped like a ship?
The inscription says the exterior is inspired by Noah’s Ark, so the church is imagined as the ark and as the Church that saves people. A pilgrimage map at Nanqiao church lists the church as one of six Jubilee 2025 pilgrimage sites approved by the Bishop of Shanghai.
What to look for
Read the stone inscription first; it names all four merged churches. Then look at the main building’s outline for the ark idea. A board at the gate says entry is free with no booking, and that commentary, filming and livestreaming need permission, so ask before photographing inside.

Yujia Church of Our Lady’s Patronage
Yujia Church of Our Lady’s Patronage was first built in April 1894 and rebuilt in 1931. It stood in Team 11 of [Shuyuan/Cunyuan; the first character is unclear]. The church had a straight, linear plan and occupied 3,200 square metres, with more than thirty mu of church farmland. In the early period after 1949 it served as a venue for political activities in [Shuyuan/Cunyuan] Township and later as a production-team warehouse. In 1991, on the basis of the property then remaining, it received a property certificate for 299 square metres and a land certificate for 6.9 mu. In May 1998, because of comprehensive industrial development in Fengxian District, a relocation agreement was signed with the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai and the church was rebuilt elsewhere.

Our translation of the Chinese
South Shanghai Catholic Church
South Shanghai Catholic Church was a relocation project combining four churches into one. It retained the patronal dedication of Yujiatang and was named the Church under the Patronage of Our Lady. The church formed part of a municipal planning and relocation project intended to arrange sites appropriately and, at the same time, resolve compensation for historical assets of the Diocese of Shanghai in Fengxian. The four churches brought together were Yujiatang, Hucun, Liuli, and Zhuanghang. The inscription gives the church's site area as 68,215 square metres and its floor area as 36,034 square metres. Of this, the government provided compensation corresponding to 1,202 square metres of floor area, while the Diocese of Shanghai undertook 2,401 square metres of additional construction. The church's exterior was inspired by Noah's Ark in the Bible: it gives visible form to the ark that saved all living things and unites this image with the Church, which brings salvation to humanity. Construction began on 30 September 2021. The following day, Nanqiao parish priests Lu Qinglin, Yu Bo, and Wu Yongtao held a church blessing ceremony. The work was completed in August 2023.
