The story
The Shanghai Museum of Glass (上海玻璃博物馆, Shànghǎi Bōlí Bówùguǎn) at 685 Changjiang West Road in Baoshan District is a museum about glass, in the north of the city. Go to see how glass is made and used, to look at glass art, and to watch or join a glassblowing session. No official hours page was reached when this entry was written, so check ahead.
The museum opened in May 2011 on the grounds of the former Shanghai Glass Instrument No. 1 Factory (上海玻璃仪器一厂), according to Chinese Wikipedia, with funding from Shanghai Light Industry Glass Co., Ltd. The same article records a new building opening in 2016.
The displays cover glass as a material, the development of glass technology and the ways glass is applied. A separate hall shows glass art. The museum also runs hot-glass sessions: visitors can watch glassblowing and try making glass crafts themselves, which is the main reason to choose it over a general museum.
Sizes are given inconsistently. Chinese Wikipedia lists the site at 20,220 square metres and the exhibition space at nearly 3,000 square metres, without explaining the gap, so read the first as the whole site and the second as the display area.
The museum is listed as a Shanghai model science-popularisation venue and a National 4A tourist attraction, per the same article.
Chinese Wikipedia lists Tuesday to Sunday opening and a summer Saturday evening session, but this has not been confirmed from an official page, and the article’s metro information is inconsistent. Treat both as unverified and confirm before travelling.
