The story

Zhou Enlai’s Residence in Shanghai (周公馆, Zhōu Gōngguǎn) at 73 Sinan Road is a 1920s garden house that served in 1946 and 1947 as the Shanghai office of the Chinese Communist Party delegation, and is now a memorial museum. Go to see an ordinary former French Concession house tied to a specific episode of the post-war negotiations. No official hours page was reached when this entry was written, so check ahead.

According to Chinese Wikipedia, the house is Spanish in style and was built in the 1920s as part of Yipin Village (义品村). It was first numbered 107 Masinan Road (马斯南路107号). The road was renamed Lantian Road in 1943 and Sinan Road in 1945, and the number later became 73. Sources differ on whether it has three or four storeys.

In spring 1946, during the political negotiations, the Communist delegation rented the house in Zhou Enlai’s name as an office, and it became known as Zhou Gongguan. Zhou Enlai, Deng Yingchao (邓颖超) and Dong Biwu (董必武) lived and worked there, and the Party’s Shanghai Work Committee also used it. The delegation added a garage beside the ground floor and turned its roof into an entrance platform.

On 28 February 1947 the Songhu Garrison Command ordered the delegation to leave, and it fully withdrew on 5 March. On 19 March the house was handed to the China Democratic League.

Restoration as a memorial began in 1979 and finished in 1981; it opened to domestic visitors in 1982 and to the general public in 1986. A bronze statue of Zhou Enlai was placed in the No. 71 courtyard in 1998, and a full renovation ran from April to August 2017.

The house was designated a Shanghai municipal heritage site in 1959. In 2019 it was added to the national list of key cultural relics protection units, in the 8th batch. Chinese Wikipedia says the museum reopened in July 2024, and English Wikipedia gives daily opening of 9:00 to 16:30 with free entry, without a current source. Confirm both before visiting.
